NASA’s GLOBE Goes to Camp Program Starts at Urban Camp

Urban Camp is excited to announce an Australian first: NASA’s GLOBE Goes to Camp program launches at Urban Camp on 11 September. This pioneering program connects students, teachers, scientists, and citizens to promote science and environmental learning through hands-on activities and real-world data collection.

What is NASA’s GLOBE Goes to Camp?

GLOBE (Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment) is NASA’s international citizen science initiative, designed to bring together young explorers and educators to study our planet’s vital signs. At Urban Camp, this program has been tailored specifically for school groups, making it a truly immersive, interactive experience.

How the Program Works

  • Urban Camp staff, trained by NASA, will deliver engaging science modules right here at camp.

  • Students can choose to study clouds or trees:

    • The CLOUDS module helps students observe and report on cloud cover, contributing ground data to NASA’s climate studies.

    • The TREES module lets students measure tree height and explore Melbourne’s urban forest, even emailing their findings for a real reply from experts.

  • Each camp session includes:

    • A NASA scientist intro video for schools.

    • Hands-on activities run by Urban Camp staff.

    • Students collect data using a supplied kit during city explorations.

    • Upload your findings directly to NASA’s Earth science database, where your data will help study global weather, climate change, and pollution.

  • The experience doesn’t end at camp, students can continue contributing to real scientific research when they return to school.

A Unique Opportunity for Schools

Urban Camp’s CEO, Elizabeth Compton, brought GLOBE Goes to Camp to Australia after attending the American Camps Association Conference. “The program will give students a chance to hear directly from NASA scientists and understand how their own observations contribute to global science. We’ve worked with NASA to create a version that suits Australian schools and our local environment.”

Get Involved

Starting next week, Urban Camp’s GLOBE program empowers students to become citizen scientists, explore Melbourne’s unique landscapes, and make a global impact with their discoveries. The program is available for just $14.95 ex GST per student and includes everything needed for an inspiring science adventure.
