Guided Programs

Secrets of the Sky Live

Cost: $90 for every 30 students / connection + booking fee

Curriculum: Earth and space sciences

Grade: 3-6

Outline: An adventure through the night sky beyond our atmosphere using Stellarium, an open source stargazing program. Students will be taken on a journey to the stars and visible planets as well as gain insight into seasonal variations in the day night cycle. Easily identifiable constellations will be explored, including the Boorong constellations (the constellations of the Wergaia Indigenous peoples from northwest Victoria).

Have you ever wondered how you can identify a star from a planet in the night sky or why we always see the same side of the Moon from Earth? The session will answer questions like these and more, including a role play which clearly demonstrates why we see the same side of the Moon! As an added bonus, students will learn how to use the Stellarium program so they can continue the journey in their own time. The session concludes with an opportunity for students to ask questions.

Blast Off Live

Cost: $90 for every 30 students / connection + booking fee

Curriculum: Science as a human endeavour, Earth and space sciences and Physical sciences

Grade: 1-4

Outline: The classic Blast off show will be adapted to an interactive virtual learning format. Students will be able to discover how rockets work and find out about the forces involved in getting rockets into space.

Students will also examine the effect of space travel on the body and learn what it is like to live in micro-gravity conditions.

This show explains the main principle of rocket propulsion using many demonstrations and the famous Newtonian law of 'equal and opposite forces'. The show also covers the history of rockets and how astronauts train and live in a weightless environment.

The usual 30 minute show will be extended to 45 minutes to accommodate close-up views of demonstrations and more time for students to ask questions.

A related classroom activity will be linked to complement this show.

The Light and Colour Variety Show Live

Cost: $90 for every 30 students / connection + booking fee

Curriculum: Physical sciences and Chemical sciences

Grade: F-4

Outline: An interactive virtual show where students work with a Scienceworks learning facilitator to uncover the science behind light and colour.

How are rainbows formed? Can you make coloured shadows? Can you always trust what your eyes see?

Students will be wowed and entertained as they are facilitated by a Scienceworks presenter in a series of experiments with light and colour. These experiments will uncover what white light is made up of, how it bends when it moves through or is blocked by different materials and what happens when that light reaches our eyes.
